An employer violates the law if it takes any retaliatory action against an employee who complains about discrimination to his or her employer or to a federal or state agency.
An employer may not retaliate against an employee for:
- filing a complaint/charge of discrimination;
- participating in an investigation of discrimination; or
- otherwise opposing discrimination in the workplace.
Examples of Retaliation:
- termination;
- demotion;
- discipline;
- coercion;
- intimidation;
- threat;
- harassment; or
- interference with the exercise of the individual’s rights or encouragement or support of another individual exercising his/her legal rights not to be discriminated against.
